Thinking of switching to the Verizon network? It would help if you had a Verizon compatible phones. This carrier is the leading wireless provider with the best coverage in the United States. If you have a smartphone you love, you don’t need to purchase a new phone to enjoy high-speed connectivity from Verizon. Besides, you can bring tablets, smartphones, and smartwatches that you purchased from Verizon, a third-party seller like Amazon, Best Buy, or another phone carrier, including AT&T, T-Mobile, and others. Verizon Compatibility Checker

To check your device’s compatibility, you must provide your device ID(IMEI) to see if your device will work with the Verizon network. Enter device ID (IMEI) as 14 or 15 digits in this case. However, if a cell phone is locked to a particular network, the IMEI number can’t work until the carrier erases the lock. Thus, the remedy is to contact your previous carrier and request them to unlock your device.

Note: You require the device ID to check Verizon compatibility. To locate your device ID,  dial *#06# for smartphones. For other phones, go to:

  1. Android: Settings > About Phone
  2. iOS: Settings > General > About
  3. Basic phones: Tools & Settings > About Phone > Status
  4. Some IMEI numbers get stuck under the battery on the back of your cell phone for a device with a removable battery.

Verizon Bring your Own Phones

If your cell phone is unlocked and compatible with the Verizon network, you can bring it over from another carrier. To BYOD to Verizon from another carrier, third-party seller, retailer, or manufacturer, you’ll have to check your device’s compatibility. Then, set up your number, select a plan and set up your payment method.

After that, you can use the My Verizon App to activate your device on its network. Additionally, for BYOD, your cell phone’s SIM card or eSIM must be compatible with the Verizon network. If the SIM card of the cell phone you’re bringing isn’t compatible with the Verizon network, you’ll require a new one. If your device packs a built-in eSIM, you can BYOD through the My Verizon app.

Interestingly, you can port in your mobile number alongside bringing your device to Verizon. When you’re porting your existing phone number to Verizon, don’t terminate your service with your other carrier until the successful activation of your new line.

How to sign up for Verizon Wireless

1. Gather all your details

You will need to put together some important information to facilitate the sign-up process including;

  • Your name and address
  • The account number on your bill
  • Account password or pin
  • Your phone’s ESN/IMEI number (if keeping your phone)
  • Phone number (if keeping your number)

If you are signing up online, keep all this information handy for a smooth experience.

2. Keep your old number

As of 2003, the Federal Communications Commission requires carriers to implement Local Number Portability (LNP). Your current provider can therefore not prevent you from bringing your number when you make the switch to Verizon. Talk to a customer care representative at Verizon and ask them to help you facilitate keeping your number.

If you are a first-time subscriber though, this should not be a problem for you.

3. Bring your own phone

Verizon has a Bring Your Own Device program that allows you to bring your unlocked device and use it to subscribe to their services.

4. Activate your unlocked phone

Navigate to Verizon’s Bring Your Own Phone page where you’ll be prompted to choose a data plan. You will be charged a one-time activation fee of $30 for new or other devices.

Now you can enjoy your unlocked cell phone! If you feel you cannot afford phone service and you qualify, sign up for Verizon lifeline phone service to get significant discounts on your service bills.

Lifeline program with Verizon

In America today, low income and high costs should not be a barrier to getting best Verizon compatible phones services. The Federal government’s program, Lifeline, is in all sense of the word, truly a lifeline to many low-income families. This program offers qualifying customers monthly discounts of around $9.25 (the amount is even higher in California) for phone services and in some cases, you may get Verizon free government cell phones.

How do I qualify for Verizon Lifeline

You can qualify for Lifeline in one of two ways;

i) Income-based eligibility

You qualify for Lifeline if your total household income is at or below the 135% mark of the federal poverty guidelines.

ii) Participation in Federal assistance programs

You qualify for a free government cell phone if you or any member of your household participates in Federal assistance programs including but not limited to;

  • Medicaid
  • Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
  • Federal Public Housing Assistance
  • Food stamps or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
  • National School Lunch Program (NSL)

Although Lifeline is a product of the federal government, it is regulated by the respective state governments hence services and eligibility may vary slightly across the different states.

Final Thoughts

Verizon is the top wireless provider in the United States. The wireless Company allows customers to use Verizon-compatible phones through the bring your own Phone (BYOP). In other words, you can purchase a compatible cell phone from a third party and use it with Verizon. For BYOD, your device must get unlocked, and its hardware and software compatible with the carrier’s network.
